Well, this one has had more time on the rack than most. When PLAY DEAD's 1984 LP "From the Promised Land" was re-issued in the early 90s, it was re-titled "Resurrection", for no good reason that anyone can remember. It transpired that Clay Records had gone bust, sold its catalogue to Sanctuary, and they had released a mish-mash of "From the Promised Land" with a load of singles and B-sides, and re-titled it "Resurrection". The band were powerless to stop the album going out in a format that was never meant to be. But now, Anagram Records have put the track selection back as intended, and re-instated "Weeping Blood" (absent from "Resurrection") to the running order along with nine bonus tracks. This is, effectively, the album the band wanted you to hear first time round. PLAY DEAD formed in Oxford in November 1980, the original line-up featuring singer Rob Hickson, formerly of SPECIAL FX, THE EXITS and SQUARES, with Pete Waddleton on bass, Barry Turnball (aka Re-Vox) on guitar and Mark 'Wiff' Smith on drums. Behind the counter was Per Aksel Lundgreen. Stephan asked for the new DEPECHE MODE record, "Music for the Masses", but that album had not arrived in the shop yet, so the record that changed hands that day was "Current News" by THE INVINCIBLE SPIRIT. They didn't know it then, but this encounter and this record, were going to change both their lives forever. Per Aksel and Stephan became friends, as both of them had a huge interest in electronic music, and both of them wanted to start bands. Stephan started APOPTYGMA BERZERK and was joined by Jon Erik Martinsen, and Per Aksel started ANGST POP, whose band name was taken from a bootleg LP by the infamous industrial act SPK. When APOPTYGMA BERZERK released their first demo tape in 1990, "Victims of Mutilation", it was on Per Aksel's 'label', Sluzk Records, which was also was the name of the record shop that he owned and ran at the time. Per Aksel was promoting APOPTYGMA BERZERK, working almost as a manager for the band, and at the same time he was recording four-track demos with ANGST POP as early as 1989. It was clear however that APOPTYGMA BERZERK was the project that was going to take off, and all the energy was put into this. Then Jon Erik left Apop in 1990, and at the same time, Per Aksel stepped in to fill his place. Suddenly the two friends had this project going together, and they worked hard to make it big and to make it happen! In between all the work with Apop, Per Aksel managed to record two songs, "Ødipus Rex" and "Panic (At T.C.F.)" for the Norwegian compilation CD,"S*x, Drugs & EBM" on Tatra back in 1992, both produced by Alon Cohen who later went on to produce the entire "Harmonizer" album for APOPTYGMA BERZERK. "Ødipus Rex" got a lot of attention, and became kind of a cult classic in many places both locally and internationally. In 1994, Cyberware Productions from Finland wanted to release a CD compilation of only Scaninavian artists, called "Melt", and they asked ANGST POP for a remix of "Ødipus Rex". This was done with the help of Alon Cohen once again, and this time, a video was also made for this new version. This was actually the very first Norwegian EBM video ever to be shown on Norwegian television! It's uploaded onto YouTube so you can check it out there! They ask for my name and it rings up that I’m here illegally – I end up getting hauled off to a holding cell waiting to be deported." Unbeknown to Tobi the last time he'd entered the UK, aged 6, he'd overstayed his visa by around fifteen years, so bringing himself to the attention of the police was to act as the catalyst for a prolonged legal case as the Home Office tried to work out where he belonged and what to do with him. "They were going to take me to Nigeria, all my family is based in the United States so they were basically just going to drop me off somewhere that I have no idea about and no current family ties to" deadpans Tobi.
